He has always been like that because thats how his coaching style has always been. And while we may rant on Chots coaching style that can be anywhere from being abrasive to de-motivating, who would be the better judge for all these but the players themselves, right? How many times has Chot blamed his players for their inability to execute during endgame situations and yet, the very same players remain loyal to him? Name it: Ryan Reyes, Jayson Castro, Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Ali Peek, Gary David, Larry Fonacier, Harvey Carey, Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger - name it, they have been castigated by Chot publicly. And yet, we still see them playing at the top of their games under his guidance. Its called accountability, a principle thats alien to younger people (Gen Y) today. Reyes has instilled this in his players, and his approach, while unorthodox to many, particularly the young, actually works. Why? Reyes is the only local coach to win the Jones Cup. Reyes is the first coach after 40 years to give us a silver medal in the FIBA-Asia. Reyes is the only coach to bring us to the World Cup after 40 years (count out 1978, we were hosts so we were automatic members), Reyes is the first coach after 40 years to give us a win in the world stage, Reyes is the most multi-titled coach in TNT history, Reyes is ranked #4 all-time among coaches with the most PBA titles. They say you need to be mentally tough to play for the national team. Ditto with being under a coach like Reyes. But a player also needs to be mature and open-minded, unlike the fans, to embrace the concept of accountability. One thing Im sure of, Junmar Fajardo, Marcus Douthit and the guard troika of Alapag, Lee and Tenorio, will rise out of this with a better and more improved mindset. - Mr. Jay P.
