He is TRULY one of the Great American songwriters of our time and all-time. You may have heard his music and didnt know. He has influenced R&B, Pop, Rap, Country and Classical musical artists. Lionel Richie is a Living Legend. Saturday night at Chula Vistas Sleep Train Amphitheatre, he perfromed before a sold out crowd of more than 10,000. Soon to be 65 years old, Richie played for nearly TWO hours during his All the Hits, All-Night Long tour and while fans werent Dancing on the Ceiling, ---we were dancing in the aisles. Richie has won a total of 5 Grammy awards and an Oscar and Golden Globe for the song Say You, Say Me, from the 1985 movie White Nights. Rodgers and Hammerstein were awesome. They won two Grammys but a slew of Oscars (15). George Gershwin never won a Grammy but his Rhapsody in Blue and Porgy and Bess compositions were some of the best. Those were different times. Richie was awarded the Gershwin Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Irving Berlin was phenomenal. So was Cohan but decades from now, Lionel Richies (who started professionally with the Commodores in 1968) music also will stand the test of time: others have performed it, its been used commercially and rarely will you enter an elevator and not hear it. Lionel Richie who was born in country music haven Alabama---played classical piano growing up. He brings his best during a perfromance every night--Still.
