He raped my sister; I want justice! Please, help me out of this predicament. I am not someone who engages in frivolities and I don’t get myself involved in anything if I am not convinced that I am doing the right thing. I am only shocked and surprised that people around me, even my mother is of the opinion that I should drop the legal battle I am engaged in with my step – mother’s nephew. I am from a polygamous home; my mother who is my father’s first wife gave birth to me the very first year they got married. Unfortunately, she was unable to conceive again for a long time, because of this, my father married another woman who immediately began to have children. She gave birth to four children before my mother could conceive again which made me 20 years older than my younger sister. Because She (Tanwa), came that late and at a time everyone had given up on mum having another child, she was quite advanced in age hence, Tanwa became everybody’s pet. My father loved her so much and she is quite a sweet child. Being her elder brother, though a lot older, I love her to a fault and we are quite close. I help mum with her schooling and everything she needed. I always told her not to worry mum about anything and you can only imagine how you would love such a sister. I work in Port Harcourt with an oil company, while my parents and my own nuclear family reside in Lagos, this made my visit to Lagos frequent. I made sure that I take care of my mother’s needs too because she really suffered to see me through school. Tanwa, gained admission into a higher institution last year and she would have been in school if not for the on going strike ASSU strike. She called me two weeks ago, in the night weeping. When I heard her voice I was scared because my mum was ill and was on hospital admission, I thought the worst had happened. But it wasn’t what I thought. I finally calmed her down and she told me that she was raped by Kudus, my step-mother’s nephew who lived with her. “Where is Small Alhaja? “That’s how we called my step mother,” she is in her room sleeping and where is Alhaji, that’s my father, both of them were sleeping she told me. I tried to calm her down the more, so I could extract details from her. I eventually learnt that Kudus had been making advances and harassing her for some time and nobody told me. After speaking with my sister, I called my father, though it was quite late, but I didn’t care. Both of them were shocked and my father stepped out to take action immediately, but of course, Kudus had taken to his heels. I pleaded with my sister to see a doctor in the morning when she goes to see mum. I however pleaded with her not to tell my mother what happened to her. I called my wife to go and see her very early in the morning so that she would help take care of her. My wife made sure she saw a doctor and was treated. I kept asking my father about Kudus where -about, but he told me that he had left the house. I asked him to make sure that he found Kudus for me and I made sure my sister did not return to the house until my mum was discharged from the hospital. I returned home last weekend and I learnt that Kudus had been home all the while my father told me that he was away. I got him arrested by the police immediately and I made everyone who cared to listen to know that I would charge him to court. Because I ensured that there was a medical report to confirm that Tanwa was raped. Kudus, however, did not deny perpetrating the act. When my mother eventually learnt about what happened to Tanwa she wept. I was however shocked when she joined those who were pleading with me that I should let Kudus go. Why? I asked her. She said she doesn’t want a situation that would cause trouble in the family. I was shocked that she does not see the gravity of what happened to my baby sister. Why are they all pleading with me to show Kudus mercy? Why is everybody not looking at the wrong she did to my sister? I am going ahead to take Kudus to court, no matter what they all say. He must suffer for what he did and he must be punished. But I am so shocked at my mother’s reaction, or have I done anything wrong by seeking justice for my sister? Please. Somebody tell me.
