He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him - Luke 10:34 We are all familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan. This premise gives a guideline on how to minister to someone who has been broken and hounded by the diverse trauma of life. - Go to the person. You cant stay in your comfort zone and expect the person to do hula hoops to get to you. Get out of your fancy churches and go to the hurting. - Bind up their wounds. Dont flaunt, expose or intimidate or disgrace. Address the wounds, pour oil on it, minister healing to them. - Oil and wine are also symbolic of the Holy Spirit and the anointing. Whatever you do, impart the Spirit to them. Jesus said his words are Spirit and Life, and his words bring healing. So share the word, pray with the hurting. - Sacrifice your comfort and convenience. This is a major hiccup for us modern day, wealth obsessed Christians. We cant give a ride to Christians, cant share our money or home. We can help as long as we are not inconvenienced. Thats selfish and Christ centered. - Lastly, it isnt enough to do all this and leave the person out in the open. We need to provide them with the resource to find a place of rest. This can be a shelter, a church home, carpooling, a stipend, whatever. Praying and sending folks on their merry way is not good enough. And living in fear of being taken advantage of is neither an excuse.
