“He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 5:10 “For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.” Ecclesiastes 7:12 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Matthew 6:24 Money, money, money is what makes the world go round. We need it to survive and we work so hard to get it and it is never enough. Financial problems and concerns are the downfall of many a man and woman. We are not wise with our money and we are so focused on the problems that arise because of our lack of money that our hearts and minds are not able to see clearly how we should feel about our money. Jesus said that we cannot serve 2 masters and that means that we must be able to master our money and not have it master us. Once we are consumed with the portion of our money and how we will get more, how we will spend what we have, how we will live, retire, what we are able to purchase versus what we want to purchase, we are servants to our money. We must be able to see money as our tool to be able to sustain ourselves but not as the driving force of our existence. Many preachers use biblical passages to persuade you to give the church more money and thereby store up treasure in heaven for yourself. I want you to realize that you will not be building any treasure in heaven no matter how much you give to any church or charity if your heart does not release its desperate grip on the need for money. Jesus said that our Father knows our needs and those will be given to us as long as we seek the kingdom of heaven first. We must recognize that not everyone is meant to have a surplus of money. We need to learn to live within our means and to not spend when it pleases us. We need to learn to let go of our love of money. We need to acknowledge when the idea of money has taken us over. This does not only apply to those who are obvious seekers of wealth. People who lack money become obsessed by it to through fear of not having the resources to live. These concerns are real but the true concern is for your souls. We need to see that where we go when we die is of more import than where we live here on earth. If your life is consumed with financial concerns, pray to God through Jesus Christ. Do not pray that your finances be improved or that you receive what you need. Pray that your fear and worry and obsession be taken from you. Pray that your perspective about money be changed. Pray that you receive wisdom and more faith. Remember Solomon prayed for wisdom and was given all because his heart truly sought the ability to rule well. Seek the ability to rule your own life well. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34 Love That Cross Pastor John Collins
