“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ (Matthew 25:45) Usually, when Ive heard a sermon on this chapter or read an article, the focus is on the did do in verse 40...“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Give a cup of cold water to someone who is thirsty and its like giving one to Jesus. If I take an account of my life from that perspective, then I feel like Ive done pretty well. I mean, I am usually happy to get a cup of cold water for someone who asks for it. There are certainly a few least of these notches on my belt. But what if I come from the didnt do perspective of verse 45? That changes things a bit. How many thirsty souls have I walked by without helping because they didnt come out and ask? How many times have I missed an opportunity to step into another persons struggle because I was afraid to interfere? The Kingdom of God is built by those who are willing to leave their safe, tidy little hovels and step out into a world filled with sorrow, struggle and need. Its TAKING water to the thirsty, rather than waiting for them to knock on the door. Water that sits in the same vessel for too long gets stale and stagnate. It needs to be poured out to be refreshed.
