The successful candidate will join the Gallery at a time when it is embarking upon a major transformation. Possessing strong museum connections and an extensive knowledge of art history, the Head Curator of International Art will be responsible for the Gallery’s International art collection and programs. International Art is one of two major curatorial Departments within the Gallery, the other being Australian Art. These two departments generate the core activities of the Gallery. This division also contains the departments of Conservation, Registration, and Public Programs, the Photographic Studio, the Edmund and Joanna Capon Research Library, and Collection Systems. The Collections Division is fundamental to the Gallery achieving its central purpose of collecting, conserving, interpreting, and displaying art for the citizens of Sydney, visitors to the city, and online visitors. Selection Criteria Selection criteria Tertiary degree in art history or equivalent, including achievement to a level of scholarship that has led to recognition as an international expert in the field. Extensive art museum experience and a substantial record of authoritative publications and exhibition projects. Extensive knowledge of international art, especially contemporary international art, with a proven ability to develop collections of the highest artistic quality. Appropriate level of communication skills as a senior manager with strong interpersonal people management skills. Highly developed international professional network Ability to discern the quality of art objects, their condition, provenance and authenticity in order to be able to recommend their acquisition or loan. A high level of project management to deliver the International Art Department’s acquisitions and exhibitions programs in a timely manner.
