Head of Ofsted calls for radical shakeup of early years education Sir Michael Wilshaw believes too many children lack basic language and counting skills when they start school Full story at: theguardian/education/2014/apr/03/radical-shakeup-early-years-education Too many of our poorest children are getting an unsure start because the early-years system is letting them down, Wilshaw will say. Perhaps Wilshaw could have said if the Early Intervention Grant had not replaced the Sure Start Central Revenue Grant and not been halved in four year….. “Many of our poorest children are now getting a sure start because the Children’s centres under national shared systems of proof are now sharing best practice, and we are seeing the benefits of this and the SureStart programme being realised.” Perhaps also we should charter a plane for Gove, Hunt and Wilshaw and all their other DfE “experts” to go to Finland which: ranks first in the 2012 OECD Programme for International Student Assessment, where formal education begins at seven and children are not made to sit a single external exam until their late teens; where Finnish children are in school for the least amount of time in the developed world; and despite all of this they still manage to consistently outperform us. Evidenced based policies anyone? Evidenced based policy training for the politicians and Civil Servants? You quite simply couldn’t make this up- but the problem is our politicians and Civil Servants do!
