Heads of state from the East African Community have agreed to set up a single currency within the next ten years. The presidents of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi -- meeting in Uganda -- agreed that, before being accepted into the union, each country would have to meet targets on inflation and debt. The BBCs correspondent in Kampala says the deal has been signed at a time of increased tension in the region, especially over the roles played by member states in the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
