Health & Wellness Tip Ever wondering how many reps you should be doing during your workout? Here’s how it breaks down: Reps of six or less encourage strength gains. The eight to 12 or six to 10 rep ranges are good for developing strength and size, which is why it is preferred by bodybuilders. Reps of 12 to 15 provide gains in strength, size and muscular endurance. This range is sometimes referred to as the toning range. Going above 15 reps primarily affects muscular endurance. Remember, your muscles need 48 hours to recover. So if you work your lower body on Monday, don’t work it out again until Wednesday. And make sure you give your body one complete day of rest a week. If you are new to exercise, take it slow. Start with a 10 to 15 minute brisk walk three times a week and increase your physical fitness from there. Resist the urge. If you are not seeing results with your current workout program, try adding in resistance training. Besides increased strength and muscular endurance, resistance training can build bone mass, lower blood pressure in hypertensive individuals, reduce body fat – and it may prevent the development of low back syndrome.
