Health warning: Gastroenteritis Outbreak - Usually associated with consumption of unwashed vegetables (carrots and lettuce). You may of heard about the recent gastro bug outbreak called Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. There are currently cases in Christchurch but also now occurring in Wellington and Auckland. Outbreaks of this are not common, and have been previously associated with the consumption of fresh vegetable produce. Foods that have been known to cause outbreaks of Yersinia pseudo include raw grated carrots, lettuce and contaminated chocolate milk. Cases present with fever, abdominal pain, which can mimic appendicitis with or without diarrhea . Usually associated with consumption of unwashed vegetables (carrots and lettuce). Incubation period is 5-10 days but can be up to 21 days. It is a timely reminder for everyone to: • Wash fresh fruit and vegetables well before eating • Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat • Only use pasteurized milk or milk products • Wash hands with soap and water: before eating and preparing food, after contact with animals, after visiting the toilet, and after handling raw meat • Dispose of animal faeces in a sanitary manner More information here: health.govt.nz/your-health/conditions-and-treatments/diseases-and-illnesses/yersinia-pseudotuberculosis
