Heard this song on the radio today and it made me think of Ferguson. Although it was received as something of a party anthem, it was actually intended as a response to a racially charged riot in the UK that grew out of a police confrontation with low-income protesters. The song focuses less on the riot and more on the basic issues of inequality underlying it. Thirty-odd years later, sadly, it still fits. (If only we had listened to Eddy Grants dystopian lyrics at the time, instead of letting ourselves be mesmerized by his exotic, untamed dreadlocks …)
