Hearing Gods Voice While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you.” Acts 10:19 Abuses always push you the opposite direction.. When you see someone going too far to one side, you lean the other way. When someone is forcing the boat to tilt perilously close to the water, without thinking you shift your weight to the other side. C. S. Lewis once observed that when Satan sends errors into the world, he always sends them in pairs. That’s why you hear someone say, “God spoke to me…” you may think, “Oh, yeah, well He doesn’t speak to me that way” so you conclude that God is really silent and that the one whose piously resounding voice irritates you hasn’t really heard from God. But here’s the question. Does God continue to speak to His own, and if so, how do you know when it is His voice, or the voice of your old nature telling you to do what feels good? Or could that prompting you feel within be from Satan? Has God gone back to heaven, closed the door, and shut us out? Reading the book of Acts brings you into confrontation with the truth that God, through His Spirit, spoke to the hearts of His own. They knew that they had heard from God. In Acts 8 you read of a man by the name of Philip who had an encounter with a government official. “The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go to that chariot and stay near it’” says Acts 8:29. Then a short time later Peter found himself in the home of Simon, the tanner, and while he was there Peter had an encounter which can only be described as supernatural. It is a vision, and records Luke who wrote the account: “While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, ‘Simon, three men are looking for you’” (Acts 10:19). There are times, no matter how difficult it may be to explain, when you know you have heard from God. Like a sharp blow to the stomach, or an elbow in your ribs, you know God got your attention and is trying to tell you something and you had better listen. How do you know when that is God?
