Heather: Hi All, today my son got his report card for math, and hes failing. His last test he scored 37%. Ive been reading how individuals with dyspraxia have problems with numeracy, but I cant find anything on coping mechanisms. My sons teacher isnt sympathetic to his situation, she tells him to stay after school, but when he does, she doesnt offer one-on-one training, just puts him into group study, which obviously he doesnt like to participate in. Hes in seventh grade and these marks are starting to count. I dont want him to fail math and have to redo it, but honestly he just doesnt comprehend the steps involved... Im at a loss, I dont know how to help him or what to do. He was in tears tonight because he cant understand why he doesnt get it, and he feels stupid. My heart breaks for him... anyone else having difficulty with math? Im open to suggestions, work habits, study habits, etc. We do have an IEP, but that doesnt really help him learn... Warren: I have an associated co morbidity of Dyscaculia which is molded in from my Dyspraxia. The brain does not cross the mid line making negative and positives highly challenging, word problems are too literal, I cant see the shapes for Geometry and lining up and understanding many step maths what I cant memorize but have to work in many steps is beyond my grasps. What particular concern is happening or all of the above you are at an age were quite frankly I maxed out maths around age 10 and sort of got up to Pre Algebra 1 and that was a far as I could go. I was great with patterns and hence multiplication tables were easy and quick for me and adding single digits were easy as well but lining them up and crossing the mid line and many steps I was stuck.
