Heathfield v G’s 1. 11. 14 It was a glorious day in Heathfield on Saturday, in fact I don’t think I have ever played rugby in such warm and sunny conditions in November. My mood however was not quite as warm as a massively depleted G’s team was forced to go uncontested due to only two front row travelling. In fact because of call ups, injurys and other unknown reasons (Will, even your Dad made the effort!!) we had only a handful of 3rd team regulars and so our 4th team game was cancelled and our brilliant and gutsy 4’s stepped up into the breach! The much larger Heath pack started strongly and huge defence from our brave boys was not enough to stop a maul resulting in a score for the oppo. Strait from the kick off, good G’s running forced a penalty in front of the posts given by the excellent referee. Can I just say what a joy it is to play our wonderful game with a good ref - It makes such a difference! Anyway, enough brown nosing, Simon slotted the pen 5 - 3. It is a big ask to step up from the 4’s and play fly half but massive congratulations to Simon L for a great game in attack and defence - Thanks mate! There followed a horrible period for G’s where Heath scored 3 tries in 5 mins. Great powerful running from their excellent 8, 14, 12 & 13 punching holes where there shouldn’t have been holes but credit where it is due, this was only partly due to bad tackling. 29 - 3 at half time. Despite the score, I felt really proud of the boys and I only got prouder as the 2nd half went on. Jack and Justin were so brave and firm in defence against much larger opposition, Dan Ayre was brutal and intelligent in his carries, Zack everywhere as usual and a huge welcome back to Nick who had a great game as stand in hooker. The desire of the team started to pile real pressure on the Heath line with only small mistakes costing us points. The last quarter was excellent from G’s as clever and dynamic running started by Dan Arnold at 8 worked their way into the Heath 22, quick ball led to Dan Ayre crashing over for a great and well deserved team try! This was converted and then great pressure from the backs resulted in probably the best score ever seen by a player in a G’s top as Marriott scored a screamer!!! 29 - 17 The game was cut short a few mins early as a nasty looking ankle injury to JP saw the captains shake hands! Hope you are back in a G’s shirt soon mate! I have to say, I really enjoyed the game and was so pleased to score a few points. Respect to all the 4’s who were, to a man, excellent. Thank you all! As always, I was tempted to give the Man of the Match to Marriott who was near genius at centre for the last quarter and certainly showed Dodge a whole new level of skill and desire (On the way home, Dodge confessed that Marriott was his 6th but by far the best, centre partner of the season!) but reluctantly it is split between Simon L and Dan Ayre. Boys you were great!
