Heaven and Hell, twin gates of ecstasy, passing through i am hammered between the anvils of transcendence and brutality until so fine like a leaf of gold i blow away on your breath... To paraphrase Robert Johnson, it is the alchemical process of self-acceptance which requires the integration of both dark and glorious aspects of our shadow, and often it is the beautiful (golden) aspects of the shadow that are the most difficult to truly integrate and accept. The deepest practice is to bring both of these marginalized aspects of identity/personality, both the heaven and the hell, into the conscious identity, to balance the self. In my experience, the Soul, which contains the shadow, is an infinite aspect of the self and so, ultimately, perpetually a wilderness, inviting our exploration. To say, then, that we know ourselves is to shut a door on the miraculous potential which we are to unfold before our own awareness as a living interior to be discovered. Let us, rather, embark daily upon the adventure of self-awareness and self-discovery. Let us respect the vast ocean of the unknown within us and at the same time receive what treasures offer themselves up to be known with gratitude and appreciation. And, finally, if this is the relationship with the self, how ever more mysterious and magical an adventure is a relationship with another human being? The possibilities are endless. Keep curiosity alive and love will never grow old. Accept who we are completely and one day there will be no further need for those of us labeled criminals or saints for we will all rest, finally, together, in the soft ground of our humanness.
