Hebrews 10 These Jewish Christians mustve really needed - TopicsExpress

Hebrews 10 These Jewish Christians mustve really needed reminding, because some of Chapter 10 is a repeat of Chapter 8, a reminder of the Old Testament promises that a Savior was coming. In that light, there is great detail in the first half of this chapter about how the old ways were only a shadow of what was to come. In fact in vs. 4 we learn definitively that the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. So then Jesus came to pay the price nothing else could pay. The reminder comes here in light of what seems to be the point of Chapter 10 ... the call to persevere. Isnt this what we all need, friends? A reminder that the God we believe in is real, and the price paid by our Savior was enough for us for all time? We do need this. And so I like to read vs. 19-39 slowly, taking in the reminder, holding tight to the warnings. And there are indeed warnings here. Encouragements: * Let us draw near to god with a sincere heart (vs. 22) * Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess (vs. 23) * Let us spur one another on toward love, good deeds (vs. 24 * Let us not give up meeting together (church attendance) vs. 25 * Your confidence in Christ will be richly rewarded (vs. 35) * Persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised (vs. 36) Warnings: * If we deliberately keep on sinning, no sacrifice for sins is left. (vs. 26) * Fearful judgment and a raging fire will consume the enemies of God (vs. 27 * Severe punishment awaits those who trample the Son of God under foot. (vs. 29) * It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God (vs. 31) * If we shrink back from our faith, God will not be pleased with us (vs. 38) I love how this chapter ends - despite its scary warnings about walking away from our God, and rejecting Jesus. It ends by declaration for believers: vs. 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved. Lets hold tight to our faith, friends. So many exciting chapters ahead for those who believe! ~Karen Kingsbury~
