Hebrews 4:15-16 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. The writer of Hebrews tells us explicitly that our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. Because of this, we should have confidence to approach God’s throne, where there is grace! This is where we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it. To put in todays language, we have a Savior – a High Priest – who has been there and done that. What the writer of our text was telling us is that Jesus not only has a knowledge about our weaknesses, He has a common experience with us in our weaknesses! You might say that Jesus does not have “Sympathy,” but EMPATHY with us. He has had the same experience as us! He has compassion on us because He KNOWS what we are struggling with. Oh we think He doesnt and in the midst of the storm its easy to think that way. When our problem looks like it just cannot be overcome its easy to think that Jesus just doesnt know what we are going through and cant have any idea the pain we feel. Isaiah 53:4-5 – Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
