Hebrews 6:13-18 Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since - TopicsExpress

Hebrews 6:13-18 Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, saying, “Surely I will bless you greatly and multiply your descendants abundantly.” And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise. For people swear by something greater than themselves, and the oath serves as a confirmation to end all dispute. In the same way God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath, so that we who have found refuge in him may find strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us through two unchangeable things, since it is impossible for God to lie. In Genesis 15 the Lord appears as “a smoking firepot with a blazing torch”. He passes through the pieces of the offering that He commanded Abraham to prepare. After doing so God makes an oath to deliver Abraham’s descendants into the promise land. While this is going on, Abraham is asleep in darkness. The Lord passes through Himself because it would be upon the Lord’s shoulders to accomplish the promise, just as it would also be upon the Lord’s shoulders to “bless him greatly and multiply his descendants abundantly.” The Lord would have to do it. Sarah was barren and Abraham was of old age. Sarah thought it was so ridiculous that she laughed when she heard of the promise for a son. You don’t come to God on your own terms, but you are invited through grace because those are His terms. When God promises, it is a sure thing.
