Heena Sidhu sparkles in air pistol NEW DELHI, SEPT. 11: Olympian Heena Sidhu asserted her undisputed class as she overwhelmed a strong field in topping women’s air pistol in the selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, Tughlakabad, here on Thursday. The 24-year-old Dentist from Patiala, Heena shot 201.1 in the final to beat another emerging talent from Punjab, Malaika Goel, by 1.3 points. Heena was outstanding in the qualification stage as she topped with 389 following a series of 98, 98, 98 and 95. It may be recalled that Heena has been in brilliant form this season, and had shot 389 and 388 in the Munich and Changwon World Cups respectively when she was placed fourth, and had placed 10th in the two other World Cups in Fort Benning and Granada. Shweta Chaudhary and Ruchita Vinerkar had followed Heena at a distance with 381 each, but Olympian Annu Raj Singh, who had 380, shot better in the final to take the third place. Malaika had shot only 379 in qualification like the other national record holder and two-time World Universiade champion, Harveen Srao, but was a class act in the final. Sport pistol specialist Anisa Sayyed and Surabhi Pathak were the others to make the air pistol final from a strong field of 75. Albha Oberoi was below par following a bad start and was 14th with a total of 374, a place ahead of Sonia Rai (374) while Sushma Singh (373) was 17th. In men’s rifle 3-position event, Satyendra Singh shot 450.5 in the 45-shot final to beat Sanjeev Rajput by 2.9 points. Olympian and national record holder Sanjeev, who topped the qualifiers comfortably with a total of 1167, was below par in the kneeling and prone stages in the final, as he trailed the leader by five points, and thus could not catch up with Satyendra Singh in the standing section. He had also been drained after being placed first in two prone matches and second in two air rifle matches earlier this season. Imran Hasan Khan who had qualified in the second place with a modest score of 1149, ended up third ahead of Ravi Kumar, Chain Singh, Navdeep Rathore, Surendra Singh Rathod and R. Abemo Kikon. In centre fire pistol, Pemba Tamang shot 588 and beat Harpreet Singh by five points to top the table, while Gurpreet Singh (580) was third ahead of Omkar Singh and Samaresh Jung. Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar was eighth on 568, as he shot two points less than the pioneer in the event, Ashok Pandit. In junior men’s sports pistol, Samarjit Singh topped with 574 ahead of Rushiraj Atul Barot (569) and Vishwajeet Singh (567), in the absence of Ajitesh Kaushal who had won the Masters title last week.
