Hei All, how about writing to the FEderal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, concerning this Fridays deadline on the proposed dredging of the great barrier reef and the dumping of millions of toxic dredge spill in the immediate vicinity. Here is a little letter I sent to the Reef Authority and then onto MInister Hunt - the more the merrier. PS Hunt is on FaceBook so easy to get to! Dear Greg Hunt; please see below my message to the Great Barrier Reef Authority: Dear GBRA; regarding the impending decision this friday concerning the application to dredge and deposit dredge spoil in the immediate vicinity of the GBR. Might I simply state that this development is a blatant case of self interest attempting to override the national and international interest. Both in terms of its biological/ecological value and the concomitant dollar value as a tourist attractor the GBR must be protected for all of mankind and the health of global marine ecologies. The reef is already under significant climatic and man-made pressures and certainly does not need the impact of toxic marine dredge spoil and the subsequent passage of bulk carriers. As far as climatic change goes, even the most conservative scientific estimates conclude that mining fossil fuels, especially coal is a terminal exercise, and recommend leaving the fossil reserves where they are, safely underground. That the QLD government and the Federal Minister are eager to ‘go for broke’ sacrificing global environmental health for the sake of a few share holder profits (much of which goes directly overseas, and almost none of which benefits the Australian Tax payer, as we lack any functional mining tax or sovereign fund in this country) could be seen as a comedy if it were not a real tragedy! As a concerned (and angry) citizen I strongly urge your department to quash this selfish and destructive application to dredge and request that my sentiments are added to the public voices in opposition.
