Helen Trinca has written an interesting piece for the Weekend - TopicsExpress

Helen Trinca has written an interesting piece for the Weekend Australian about DBC Pierre the Man Booker 2003 winner with Vernon God Little. He is described as Australian writer which is a bit of stretch as he has spent more time out of the country than it. He is currently living in Ireland no doubt the tax benefits that the Irish Government gives to writers. Pierre who was born Peter Warren Finlay in 1961 in South Australia told Trinca that his Australian years did have an influence on him. He says he feels freerer in Britian than he ever did in Australia and made this comment: I think it is based on history. Its ( Australia) has always been a managed population, which regarded its spirit as inherently dangerous and criminal, and it is, God love it, a very suspicious country, of itself and its citizens. Youve got zero rope, you cant cut any corners there because some one will watch you. Its a dobby place compared to here. DBC Pierre is apparently now on the wagon. For me there is a truth in what he has to say. The need to conform in Australia is still a very important part of our makeup.
