Hell of a day. I spent most of it working with people I like and admire at a job I love. Spent my lunch break and evening hours volunteering for causes and campaigns I believe in, ALSO with people I like and admire. The Giants won the World Series. I came home late to a sleeping woman who is the love of my life. It made me think of this song, which maybe sounds melancholy to most folks but has always given me a lot of comfort and hope with a simple lyric halfway through: I got someone who loves me tonight, I got over a thousand dollars in the bank, and Im all right. Then I thought about the first thing Im doing tomorrow: attending the press conference where OPD will discuss their arrest of the suspected shooter in the murder of 30-year-old mother-of-four Perla Avina. I thought about what her family has lost. I thought about my mother. I thought about Ms. Avinas husband. And its just staggering. I am so, so grateful for the life Ive been given. I am so, so heartbroken for what Ms. Avinas family is going through, what too many families go through every year in Oakland and elsewhere. I am horrified and outraged that this kind of cruelty and injustice can strike our neighbors, and grateful for the folks who are determined to put an end to it. Theres a middle ground in there, a strange harmony of gratitude and sorrow both singing at the same time. I guess thats what I hear in this song, too.
