Hello All and thank you for your comments regarding the loss of Tugun vegetation. Below are details of the planting proposed by Council for Toolona and Kitchener Street, and the prior consultation issued to residents. This information was provided in a recent email from Council advising that replanting is due to commence Monday the 24th November. ......500 new trees are being planted within this location made up of 100 litre Alectrton coriaceus, Cupaniopsis aracardioides, Acemena hemilampra, Waterhousea floribunda and large grade ex ground Agathis robusta in the centre median strips of Toolona and Kitchener. All the tree locations are marked with a dot on the kerb of each location of where the trees are going in. More than 1320 notifications went out to all the residents in the area more than two weeks ago and we received no complaints or issues. Works orders have been raised and any delay in the scheduling of this project will incur additional costs to Council and will have a knock on effect on two other large scale Council projects The trees removed Spathodea campanulata (African Tulip trees) a class 3 declared pest and Corymbia torelliana, (Cadagahi) an environmental weed in south-eastern Queensland would have been removed regardless of this project commencing. Likewise all of the residents had also been notified of this action. Also any dead or poor form trees have also been removed...... Even at this late stage the TPA will be making every effort to liaise with the Coordinator Parks & Open Space Services to promote a final selection of species which: • are consistent with the area, and most importantly have a good survival rate and grow true to form under local conditions • form a canopy which provides shade and an appropriate level of visual buffering of the street(s) broad vista • ensures traffic visibility and public safety. The TPA will also be voicing its frustration with the lack of open consultation with the community. While a letter box drop is a valid part of community consultation, it is only that – a small part which is easily overlooked by residents amongst the junk mail. The TPA will be making use of this example in our request for the TPA and the Tugun community to be formally and directly consulted on issues having a significant impact on Tugun. As one of our committee members stated ‘The community deserved genuine consultation on such an image-changing proposal’. Regards, Adam Gilltrap President - TPA
