Hello Dears... It has been a while has it not? I have a new review!!! This time I was in the Heart of the Triad, with a dear friend Wayne, at a place called J.Peppers. I have heard about it for some time, and even a few friends advised me to give it a shot... So here I am. It looked very promising, very nicely decorated, albeit a small floor plan but roomy. Upon entering you are greeted buy the spacious bar, it appeared to be very well stocked. Though I love a good drink, it was noon and a lady does not get sloppy to early! Please keep in mind that I am a character with size, sadly our host did not heed that when seating us... note to all my Plus Sized Divas, tables are your only option for comfort here. The atmosphere was nice and our server was very attentive, though she did not give her name. Wayne had commented that the menu was small and I assured him that it was due to the fact that most small town gills as such have a small tight menu that they excel on, and in seeing that, I was hoping for a culinary treat. Wayne settled for the Pan Seared Meatloaf and a Caesar Salad (to sub the salad for the side item did cost extra btw). I had the Shrimp and Grits and House Salad. We were asked if we would like bread, and it was brought to the table after our affirmation. It was not made on site but was baked on site, very reminiscent of a thaw, proof, and bake roll. As most of you know I am a very good cook and Shrimp and Grits is one of my specialties to prepare for guests, friends, and family. Though I am partial to the low country version, this was not it. I read the description clearly. A Creamy Parmesan Sauce with bacon over Grit Cakes. I have seen it prepared this way before, I have never liked it but I was willing to give it a try. Our salads came first, I had no issue, but Wayne felt the Caesar dressing was a bit strong. Two-thirds into my salad our entrees came out. By the look on Waynes face I knew this was not going to be good, but I was hoping for the best. Two quarter inch slices no bigger than a note card, each topped with a thick Tomato puree. Wayne describes it as a meaty salt lick with concentrated Ketchup. I tasted a small piece with no sauce, but very very little got on my fork. The Meatloaf was very salty and quickly masked by the sauce that hit my tongue. It was served on a plate that was much to large for the portion that was offered. I had a nice lunch sized serving, but could tell by the smell the shrimp were over cooked. Mixed in the sauce were fresh diced tomatoes, I am not a fan of tomatoes in the raw, but cooked they are good to go as far as I am concerned. I spent a good few minutes picking them off. (they were not in the item description) As I had thought the shrimp were indeed over cooked, and after a few bites of the grit cake I came to the conclusion that the grits used were under cooked. As far as bacon...wow. I will admit that bacon make things better, but there was so much bacon that the description should have read - Bacon-Cream Sauce with Shrimp over a Grit Cake. True to my own self creed I finished the whole meal. J PEPPERS RESTAURANT 841 Old Winston Rd Suite 98 Kernersville, NC 27284 Money Damage $30.00 thats with the tip. Zoi- ZZ Wayne- WWW Phil could not make it, but glad he didnt. Last words for this review; I was deeply disappointed, but I am willing to give them one more chance to prove me wrong. Let us hope they do.
