Hello Emidio, My name is Lily Li, and I am an immigrant and an American citizen. I wanted to share my story with you because right now immigration reform is at a critical juncture, and we need your help today. I was born in Beijing, China, but when I was six, my family came to the United States on temporary student visas, which allowed us to stay for three years. Shortly after we arrived, the massacre at Tiananmen Square prompted the U.S. to pass the Chinese Student Protection Act, which granted permanent residency to nearly 30,000 Chinese nationals. I was one of them. Growing up, money was scarce, but my parents worked hard to make ends meet. I quickly learned to appreciate the value of hard work. When my second grade teacher once asked what our biggest fears were, many classmates answered snakes, or monsters. When the teacher turned to me, I replied, Not having a job when I grow up. Even at the age of 7, I was already thinking like an entrepreneur. One summer, my family inherited over 5,000 books. Online shopping was becoming popular so I decided to start an e-commerce business, and over time, with business hitting a stride and a part-time job at the bank, I was able to pay for college myself! Share my story with Congress now if you’re already inspired to take action. It only takes a moment, and can help others pursue their own American dream. Share my story in a letter to your representative now When I was 20, I naturalized and became a U.S. citizen. I received my degree from U.C. Berkeley soon after and was able to secure a job with Google after graduating. Today, I am a Developer and Platform Marketing Manager at Microsoft. Just last year, I saved enough money to buy my own home. I’m truly fortunate and thankful to be living my own American Dream. Supporters of FWD.us have already sent thousands of letters in support of immigration reform to their representatives, and we need to keep the pressure up. We need to show Congress that the majority of Americans care deeply about fixing our broken system. Share a letter with your Member of Congress highlighting my story to help bring immigration reform to a vote. Congress needs to know that although immigrants come from different cultures, they often share common principles such as appreciating the value hard work, embracing opportunity, and being extraordinarily grateful of good fortune. The opportunity to be a permanent resident gave me the chance to live my life the way I wanted to live. Let’s tell Congress that now is the time to fix our broken immigration system, to both strengthen it for our modern economy and allow others to pursue their own American dreams. Thank you for your time, Lily Li
