Hello Everybody! Wow! I just went to see Get On Up, the new film about one of my biggest musical heroes, James Brown. I know most of you dont see much of his influence on my choreography but, its there, JUST below the surface... Its really a pretty well done glimpse into the Godfather of Soul and the events that made him the man and the musician that he was. It goes into a few vignettes from his childhood and offers some insight into the experiences that informed his amazingly innovative, laying it all out there, brand of song becomes entertainment and music becomes as visual a picture of a mans soul laid bare every night as youre EVER likely to see. I was there the night he played in Boston in 68 just after MLK Jr was murdered and met James and his band that afternoon at the sound check and I hold that day in my memory as being one of the top 25 biggest days of my life. May you rest in peace, my brother.
