Hello FB family and friends, I usually only post about UK sports and fun places that the family visits or pics of my kids. I want to get on my soap box for just a minute. Many of you remember that that a few years ago I lost over 50 lbs. Since then I have gained 25 of those pounds back. The end result of this weight gain is being diagnosed with high blood pressure. This week my doctor put me on prescription medicine to lower my blood pressure. At first I was depressed and then mad at myself for putting weight back on. Not sure at this time if my increased BP is genetics or because of my weight gain. I plan to find out soon by getting motivated to lose the weight I have put back on. If it is genetics, then I will live with it. If not, than shame on me for not exercising and putting weight back on. This leads me into my concern on the overall health of our country. For my last class in grad school I did a research paper on obesity in the workforce. I was astounded by findings. Obesity is an epidemic with high health and economic costs. Currently over two-thirds of the American population is either obese or overweight. 2/3rds!! Obesity is a known risk factor for over thirty medical conditions and as a result leads to higher medical costs due to direct correlation with diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, depression, and certain types of cancer. The cost from being obese cannot just be measured in increased medical and insurance costs, but the cost of quality of life as well. As a public service announcement, please review your lifestyle and eating habits. Let’s all forgo that second helping at dinner, walk, ride a bike, or go to the gym. Let’s all be here longer for our kids and grandkids. Who’s with me?
