Hello Fellow Rockers, A few months ago I was in Bhutan. It was there that I saw, for the first time, the world’s largest statue of Buddha. It was massive, it was elaborate, it was, in short, impressive! That was all that it was though, “impressive. It wasn’t kind or powerful or talkative or good natured or ill tempered. It wasn’t any of those things primarily because, well…it wasn’t living. I’ve been to India numbers of times and I am always struck by the sheer numbers of idols surrounding me in every day life there. There are idols on the street, idols in the temples, idols in the car, idols in the kitchen, idols in the bathroom (creepy), idols everywhere. Yet, in the midst of so many “gods” and “goddesses” and in the presence of constant reminders to worship, one thing is clearly absent, relationship. This week we will get a glimpse into the stark contrast between the “living God and the “gods” we find Israel settling for in the wilderness. You may be surprised by the discoveries we will make along the way and the alarming outcomes of “settling” for less! I Love Being Your Pastor, Jonathan Walker
