APPLIED PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE-THE INDIAN CONTEXT by Narsanna Koppula from 16TH JANUARY-30TH JANUARY, 2015 From January 16th till January 30th we are hosting Narsanna Kopulla from Aranya Agriculture Alternative to facilitate the Applied Permaculture Design Course-The Indian context (APDC) for students of ecology, agriculture, art and design and anybody enthusiastic about organic farming and sustainable design. For the 15-day course participants will stay at the Organic farm surrounded by a forest teeming with wildlife, along with exploring the woods and eating organically grown food from the farm and local varieties of vegetables and cereals, they will engage in: -Pattern understanding and site design: Landforms, Climate -patterns, Monsoon, Flatlands vs slopes -Soil: Fertility, composting, mulching. Soil types. -Water sources, water harvesting: swales, bunds, contours. -Fence, fence planting, Measuring the land, elements of design, zone planning -Structures: House on a farm, cattle shed, bore well, solar pump -Farm home garden: Garden layout, dryland gardens -Orchards, farm forestry and crops -Seed conservation and preservation -Storage of crops, post-harvest management -Diversity in orchards, biomass trees, medicinal trees -Animal husbandry: Cattle, poultry, goat, sheep, basic animal care -Bees and their integration into farms -Commmunity interaction: Urban and rural interlinks, Marketing and connecting consumers and producers, Organic certification - And much more! We would love to host facilitators at our farm who can help conduct courses and programmes based on permaculture, alternative agricultural practices, ecological art and design. Also we our currently building our seed bank consisting of a variety of indigenous seeds from the region and would be glad to exchange and share them with other seed banks in order to grow a well established network of source seeds.
