Hello! Im Maddison Hughes, a film student at the University of Texas at Austin just a year shy of finishing my education and being thrust into the real world. When I was offered the opportunity to come on board as an ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs intern to help facilitate the Boot Camps at Aurora Picture Show, I was initially thrilled, and then just the right amount of intimidated by what the experience would entail. Being allowed to study the craft of filmmaking in my formal education has widened my world in many ways, but one of the most gratifying parts of my schooling is getting to soak things up from truly phenomenal, insightful educators. With this position, I was to impart my knowledge and excite the young auteurs. The tactic I landed upon was simple: To never let them stop questioning the boundaries of reality, and to make sure that, going forward, they truly believe in creativity as a way of life and not a skill dusted off every now and then. As it turns out, these incredible minds have no issue with creativity. Over the past six weeks, the storylines, concepts, characters, and off-the-wall wigs have had me laughing harder than ever. All of this is to say that, while I genuinely hope I have been able to kindle some fresh flames for these fiery kids to continue to make films, I can say with absolute, whole-hearted certainty that my love for the art has been undeniably further impassioned. Aurora Picture Show, at its essence, exists purely to do just this for artists and enthusiasts of all ages and levels of expertise. Their selfless dedication to the continuous expansion of the appreciation for moving image art is enough to incite passion, but their bona fide mission of youth education is unparalleled. It has been my deepest honor to be granted this opportunity, one that I will undoubtedly never forget.
