Hello, My name is Pierrot Rutagarama. I am currently a sophomore attending the University of Rochester, and I am the president of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS), a campus organization that supports minority students planning to enter health professions, including medicine, dentistry and nursing. Our organization offers mentoring, professional development workshops, and other resources to help members succeed both in and outside of the classroom. Many of the students that comprise MAPS are interested in pursuing a career in medicine; thus our organization tries to provide our members with regular opportunities to learn about the medical field and what it entails to reach this goal. This upcoming semester, MAPS hopes to attend the 51st Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC), scheduled for April 1-5 in New Orleans. This year’s conference theme is “Unsilencing the Unheard and the Undeserved” and is focused on shaping current and future underrepresented medical students into culturally competent professionals. By highlighting the medical needs of underserved communities, the 2015 AMEC aims to help both undergraduates and medical students better understand the problems facing many patients that they will eventually encounter and treat. The goal is for students at all stages to walk away better informed and better prepared to be empathetic, culturally competent physicians who can take an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to medical care. University of Rochester’s MAPS is very passionate about our cause and about giving minority students the opportunity to attend conferences like this. However, our organization is not funded by the Students’ Association nor the university itself. Our funds are very limited and many of our members cannot afford to pay the full price to attend the conference. As the President of MAPS and on behalf of my organization I am asking you to help us send 8 University of Rochester MAPS members to the 2015 AMEC. We have estimated the cost to be approximately $700 per student.
