There is an upcoming seminar, Urban Space: Exposing the Politics of Social Control at Oriel Davies Gallery in Newtown on the 4th of December. Chair: Bella Kerr How do societys urban and technological infrastructures exercise social, physical and psychological control? This seminar will bring together academics and campaigners to explore and discuss the tensions, struggles and resilience in the urban landscape. Urban Space: Exposing the Politics of Social Control is the third and final seminar in the Dialogue series which has focused on a range of themes explored by the Artes Mundi 6 shortlisted artists. Hanna Baumann is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Urban Conflicts Research at the University of Cambridge whose research focuses on mobility in and around East Jerusalem. urbanconflicts.arct.cam.ac.uk/people/hanna-baumann Dr Nicholas De Genova is Reader in Urban Geography and Director of the Cities Research Group at King’s College London. He is currently writing a new book on The Migrant Metropolis, and editing a new book on The Borders of “Europe.” kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/geography/people/academic/de-genova/index.aspx Javier Ruiz Diaz leads on policy at the UK based Open Rights Group. His recent work has covered openness and privacy, state surveillance and copyright reforms.
