Hello Troop 249 Families, We are in need of a truck to pickup a bridge prop from the Victorville Girl Scout Office. It will need to be picked up tomorrow, Thursday, May 22, 2014, and returned Wednesday morning, first thing. If you can help out our troop, with either pickup or drop-off duties, thank you very much. Please note that a $25 troop check (from Kathy Tobin) will need to be dropped off when picking up. Also, Below is the program for the Wrightwood Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26, 2014 - As you can see, they would like the Girl Scouts there for a 10:00 a.m. briefing for the morning activities. Girl Scouts will be greeting guests, supervising the Poppy table, and presenting the Wreath (all girls together walking forward to lay the Wreath on the Memorial stone). The Wrightwood Veterans Memorial is located on Evergreen between Park and Pine. Girls should be in what uniforms they have - and be instructed that this is a very serious ceremony; and, as such, should be on their best behavior. Thank you very much, Troop 249 Leaders Wrightwood Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 26, 2014 Prelims: 6 to 9:00 a.m. Flag lowered to half-staff, Set barricades closing off Evergreen, Boy Scouts set up chairs and stage area (including pop up shades, seats for Official Party and WW Men’s Chorus). Sound system set up/music, mike at podium for MC and speakers (podium stored at Cap’n Tom’s). Hank provides doughnuts and hot choc. 10:00 Girl and Boy Scouts briefed, Jill prepares to MC Pre-Event, Sunrise Church set up free water, Girl Scouts start hostess duty/poppy sales. 10:15 or earlier Jill introduces Fiddlers On the Wind blue-grass group, 20+ minutes, Lora Steinmann’s youth musical group, and Wrightwood Elementary Chorus approx. 8 minutes songs 10:45 Jill comments on the Posters that have been placed on display, introduces AFJROTC Drill Team from DESERT HIGH SCHOOL, Edwards Air Force Base, mention Col. Sullivan (USAF Ret) team sponsor. Drill Team presents close-order drill (at this time, Official party assembles, MC Captain Tom Pinard, USN (Ret.), Pastor Dave, Assemblyman Steve Fox, Jim Wilkins, Assistant Sheriff Williams and Wrightwood Men’s choral group and, across the Memorial, Boy Scout Color Guard take their places). 11:00 MC goes to podium, “please stand and remain standing for Invocation and Flag Ceremony,” introduces Pastor Dave for Invocation. 11:02 MC signals Color Guard to “Advance the Colors.” Color Guard comes to center of Memorial, faces audience 11:05 MC invites Jill Hetzel to lead those assembled in Pledge of Allegiance. 11:07 MC introduces Morgan Kendrick for the singing of the National Anthem, 11:11 MC signals “Retire the colors!” Boy Scouts proceed to the east side of the park with the Colors – secure the Colors. 11:13 MC invites audience to sit, calls on Erinn Dockins, winner of the high school essay contest to come forward, receive his/her recognition and read the winning essay. 11: 18 MC mentions Jill Hetzel and her husband Kevin (who cannot be here), and their contributions over the past seven years, from the initial fund raising to huge contribution of time and materials to bring our local youth into the two Veterans events each year. THEN gives brief remarks about the choice this year of Honoring those 3000 who lost their lives in the 9-11 attack; civilians, first responders, the valiant defenders of freedom, the “Modern Miinutemen,” on UNITED FLIGHT 93 expand here)….. and 55 service members at the Pentagon who died. He then speaks of Veterans who gave their all in defense of the United States and asks VETERANS in audience to stand and be recognized when your service song is sung. INTRODUCES Wrightwood Choral Group, under direction of Barbara Van Houten….. 11:20 “Songs of the Service” is sung by Wrightwood Men’s Choral Group 11:24 MC invites all to sit, introduces Assemblyman Fox for short remarks. 11:26 MC, with prepared background notes, gives short introduction for Jim Wilkins 11:27 Jim Wilkins, retired San Bernardino County Fireman gives remarks (7/10 minutes) 11:37 (no introduction) Wrightwood Men’s Choral Group, sing “This is My Country” 11:40 MC, with prepared background notes, introduces Assistant Sheriff David Williams 11:42 Assistant Sheriff Williams gives keynote speech on Memorial Day at Wrightwood Veterans Memorial, this year saluting the efforts of those who died and those who toiled valiantly to save as many on September 11, 2001 (8/10 min). 11:51 (no introduction) Wrightwood Men’s Choral Group sings ‘God Bless America’ 11:54 MC says “PLEASE STAND” and signals for Boy Scouts to “raise the Colors and retire this Flag that has served so long and well. Flag detail raises, then lowers Colors, replaces with new flag, raises new flag then folds old flag and retires. 11:59 MC calls for representative(s) of FIRE SERVICE to come forward (Jim Wilkins and to be determined representatives), Asks Girl Scouts to carry wreath to Monument, Wreath Laying is observed and TAPS played by George Freeborn… Please be seated. 12:03 Benediction by Pastor Dave 12:05 “Thank you for coming” Ceremony concludes…. Here would be nice, if they would like, for Fiddlers On The Wind to come back and play Conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of flag (why shifting flag raising to close to 12) m) The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon …..During hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, those present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
