Hello VOA show: Proposed amendment regarding army courts Host: Nosherwan Qalandar Time: 7:05 pm Guest: Noor Alam Adovcate (legal and Human rights experts) Deewa Today’s Hello VOA to talk on Pak parliament debate on the constitutional amends to allow army to prosecute ‘terrorists’: The establishment of military courts in Pakistan has become controversial with deep division as Human rights and civil society organizations are opposed to the idea because it usurp rights of the citizens. PMLN govt on Saturday tabled a constitutional amendment bill in the lower house of the parliament (National Assembly) to allow the military to run courts for speedy handling of cases relating to terrorism and sectarian violence. The bill calls for holding speedy trials of accused people “known to belong to any terrorist group formed in the name of religion or sect”. The show will bring in legal experts and analysts from the civil society to talk on the questions the idea of military courts raise, the scope and effectiveness of the military-run courts and legalities of the courts in the presence of civilian courts in the country. Also the show will highlight the fears of the military courts to prosecute those vulnerable people in the country under the selective army definition of “state enemy”- a word applied to political and rights moments in the country in the past.
