His father was active in the world of commerce and belonged to the Third Order of Saint Francis and was known for his generosity His mother, Isabel Leite de Barros, was a farmers daughter, and aunt of the famous bandeirante explorer Fernão Dias Pais, known as the emerald hunter. She gave birth to eleven children before her premature death in 1755, at age 38 Equally known for her generosity, Isabel had given all of her clothes to the poor at the time of her death. At age 13 Saint Antonio attended the (Society of Jesus) Jesuit seminary in Belem but later decided to become a Franciscan friar At age 21, on April 15, 1760, Galvão gave up a promising future and his familys influence on society, becoming a novice at the Saint Bonaventure Friary in Macacu, Rio de Janeiro. There, he adopted the religious name of Antonio of Saint Anne Galvão, in honor to his familys devotion to Saint Anne. During his novitiate, he was known for his piety, zeal and exemplary virtues. Saint Antonio Galvão made his solemn profession on April 16, 1761, He took the Franciscan vow to defend the Blessed Virgin Marys title of Immaculate, which was still a controversial doctrine at that time. On July 11, 1762, Brother Antonio Galvão was ordained a Catholic priest and transferred to Saint Francis Friary the city of São Paulo, where he continued his studies in theology and philosophy. In 1768 he was appointed preacher, confessor and porter of the convent, which was an important post He was a Brazilian friar of the Franciscan order Within a few years he was appointed confessor to the house of Recollect women (nuns) who were devout to Saint Teresa in the city of São Paulo, Brazil There, he met Sister Helena Maria of the Holy Spirit, a penitent nun who claimed to have visions where Jesus was asking her to found a new Recolhimento house Father Antonio Galvão, who was her confessor, studied these messages and consulted with others who recognized them as valid and supernatural. Father Antonio Galvão collaborated in the foundation of the new Recollect house, named Our Lady of the Conception of Divine Providence, which was established on February 2, 1774 in the same city. It was modeled after the Conceptionists, and became the home for girls who wished to live a religious life but without taking vows. With Sister Helenas sudden death on February 23, 1775, Father Antonio Galvão became the new head of the institute, serving as the sisters new spiritual leader Father Antonio Galvão was later named guardian of the Saint Francis Friary in São Paulo in 1798, being re-elected in 1801 It took Father Antonio Galvão 28 years to build the convent and church, with the latter being inaugurated on August 15, 1802. In addition to the construction work and duties within and outside his Order, Father Antonio Galvão committed himself to the Recollects formation. The Statutes he wrote for them was a guide for the interior life and religious discipline In 1811, he founded Saint Clare Convent in Sorocaba. Eleven months later, he returned to the Saint Francis Friary in the city of São Paulo. In his old age, he obtained permission from the Bishop and the guardian to stay at the Recollect house Saint Antonio Galvão died at the Recollect house on the 23rd of December, 1822, in São Paulo, Brazil He was laid to rest in the Recolhimento Church, and his tomb continues to be a destination for pilgrimages of the faithful who obtain graces through his intercession. In 1929, the convent of Our Lady of the Conception of Divine Providence became a monastery, incorporated into the Order of the Immaculate Conception The building, now called Monastery of Light, has been declared a world cultural heritage site ---------------------------------------------------------- Saint Antonio Galvão was a man of great and intense prayer, and certain mystic phenomena are attributed to him, such as telepathy, premonition and levitation. Saint Antonio Galvão is listed among the “Levitating In The Presence Of Saints” He had the miracle of levitation (process by which an object is suspended against gravity, in a stable position, without physical contact or support). Other Saints who also experienced “miracle of levitation” were Saint Martin the Porres, Saint Francis Xavier , Saint Joseph of Cupertino , Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint John Bosco , Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Philip Neri, Saint Ignatius Loyola, .. amongst others.. ---------------------------------------- Like Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Antonio Galvão also had the gift of bilocation Cases of bilocation are famous in Saint Antonio’s life He was reported to be in two different places at the same time in order to take care of sick or dying people who asked for his help especially all who needed the Holy Sacraments before death. Saint Antonio was also sought for his alleged healing powers, in a time where medical resources were scarce. At one occasion, Saint Antonio wrote a Latin phrase from the Office of Our Lady (After childbirth thou didst remain a Virgin: O Mother of God, intercede for us)in a piece of paper, rolled it like a pill, and gave it to a young woman whose heavy renal colic was risking her life. After she drank the pill, the pain ceased immediately and she expelled a large amount of renal calculus. On another occasion, a man asked him to help his wife through a difficult childbirth. Saint Antonio Galvão gave her the paper pill, and the child was quickly born without further complications. The story of the miracle pill spread, and Saint Antonio Galvão had to teach the Recollect sisters to make the pills in order to give them for people in need, which they still do nowadays. They are handed out for free to some 300 faithful who require them daily. He is one of the best-known religious figures in Brazil Saint Antonio was renowned for his healing powers worked by God through him On October 25, 1998, Saint Antonio Galvão became the first Brazilian-born person to be beatified by the Vatican, having been declared Venerable a year earlier, on March 8, 1997 He is honoured in the Roman Catholic Church He was given the degree of heroic virtues and was declared as Venerable on the 8th of March, 1997 by Pope Saint John Paul II ( who was the 264th Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) He was beatified on the 25th of October 1998, in Rome also by (who was the 264th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) Blessed Antonio was canonized on the 11th of May, 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI ( who was the 265th Bishop of Rome since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) Antonio became the first Brazilian-born Saint He was the first Saint Pope Benedict XVI canonized in a ceremony held outside the Vatican City His elevation to the Sainthood status came after the Catholic Church established that he had performed at least two miracles According to the Church, the stories of Sandra Grossi de Almeida and Daniella Cristina da Silva are evidences of divinely inspired miracles by Saint Antonio Galvão. After taking one of the paper pills, Almeida, who had a uterine malformation that should have made it impossible for her to carry a child for more than four months, gave birth to baby boy Enzo. Saint Antonio Galvãos pills are also certified by the Church with the healing, in 1990, of Daniella Cristina da Silva, a four-year-old girl suffering from what doctors considered incurable hepatitis. By all accounts, Saint Antônio de Sant’Anna Galvão was quite normal with the exception of his miracles. He lived a life of Franciscan simplicity, extending the testimony of Christ to everyone. He lived a life of holiness in the day-to-day as a man of prayer, preacher, confessor, a missionary popular, and also mason porter of the Franciscan convent in downtown Sao Paulo. As porter, he was cheerful and friendly and welcomed everyone. ----------------------------------- During the beatification homily of Saint Antonio, Pope Saint John Paul II quoted from the Second Letter to Timothy (4:17) The Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the word fully, And then the Pope said that Antônio fulfilled his religious consecration by dedicating himself with love and devotion to the afflicted, the suffering and the slaves of his era in Brazil. The pope continued, His authentically Franciscan faith, evangelically lived and apostolically spent in serving his neighbor, will be an encouragement to imitate this ‘man of peace and charity.’ Sister Celia Cadorin, who spearheaded the cause for his canonization, defined the gentle friar as possessing “the tenderness of God. She said: He was a priest, a Friar of delicacy, gentleness, and kindness, especially to the poor. He was the brother of prayer.
