Hello all my friends in OIGS, Apologies at the outset for the 2 - TopicsExpress

Hello all my friends in OIGS, Apologies at the outset for the 2 week delay in posting the next edition of SEGA – Saaz Ek, Geet Anek. Last two weeks were extremely busy as I had a deliverable at work which I needed to complete. Now I am a little free and hence making time to put up the post. Let me start by acknowledging the assistance that Shekhar Nerala gave me in researching this post. As you know, I had alluded to a specific Musical instrument when I had, 2 weeks ago, declared my plans for the next post. This sound of this instrument instantly transports you to cool climes – even if it is the height of summer, you suddenly feel a pleasant coolness descend on you. You feel moisture of the rivers, you visualize snow on the mountaintops, you smell fresh flowers. The sound is that of the Santoor. Reportedly originating in Persia but nurtured in Kashmir, the sound of the Santoor is similar to the environs where the instrument took root. At first thought, there are not many songs which have the Santoor as a pre-eminent sound but Shekhar found many songs and sent me links. Here is the first one - a duet featuring Mukesh and Lata from the film Mere Humsafar set to music by Kalyanji Anandji. The opening notes of the Santoor, as well as in the stanzas – create a magic. And the outfits worn by the characters on the screen match what we have seen mostly in Kashmir. youtu.be/IIutlVFZ4zM
