Hello everyone :) A happy Human Rights Day to you ! Like Nicky, I would like to organize a trip down to SAMREC ( South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre) in PE next term as part of the ACTIVISM programme. This would probably be around the 2nd weekend of term. Although they mainly deal with penguins , they also rescue and rehabilitate other marine animals including seal cubs. The aim is to increase awareness and get people to help out with the African Penguin which has approximately 4 years left until extinction and just about 5% of the total global population remain. Of this , half are to be found in Algoa Bay. This means that they are literally just at our doorstep. WE can DO something about this..even if it starts with an educational field trip. I am in the process of trying to find out costs - ie transport etc and Im hoping to partner up with WIldReach. My plan is to get a class of school children down with us . The trip would comprise of the visit to the SAMREC and hopefully include a bit of a beach clean up with SAMREC. Each person going would be allocated one of the children (in teams of two) . Packed lunches will be provided , it will be up to you to learn some info about penguins and beach clean ups and share this with your child ... ie marine environmental learning. Although food and transport can be covered by your membership fees , it is suggested that we all chip in R30-R40 to help cover costs of taking one of the school kids in Grahamstown? Many of these children have not seen penguins before , let alone the beach. It will be a treat for them :) Would anyone be keen in joining the Activism team for such an event ? All I need is a YES or NO answer to any of you members interested in coming along so i can plan numbers etc. You can comment on this post, email me [email protected] or whatsapp me 0785849496 your answer :)
