Here is this weeks Tutoring Tip on homework help - Model skills such as organizing and prioritizing work: - With your student, make a list of what needs to be done and include due dates. - Come up with a schedule you will follow for that tutoring session, as well as subsequent ones, so your student knows what to expect. - Cross off each task as it is accomplished and make sure you point out the progress they are making. (Be colorful & creative by highlighting or placing stickers next to completed tasks). Create an environment which is conducive to learning: - Find a spot where distractions are minimal and there is a clean workspace free of other projects. - Help your student to pull out all books and papers, and make sure you have pens, pencils, and anything else you need before getting started to limit disruptions later. Remember that building a trusting relationship with your student is important: - Let them know that you are there to help them and that you respect their willingness to try even when the work is difficult. - At times you will have to point out mistakes, but make sure you focus on what they do correctly. Capitalize on days when your student doesn’t have homework: - Take the opportunity to play a fun, educational game or pick out a book to read together. - Try to keep the focus on learning something new or improving in challenging areas. - If you do suspect that your student actually does have homework, try to work with the site supervisor to communicate with the student’s teacher regarding homework assignments.
