Hello everyone, I would love for you to take the time to read the following information about an event I will be performing at on July 28th. I am very excited about being a part of this event, as it involves the History of a Theatre that I attended as a child, that was later demolished in 1977. I will be performing at around 4:00 pm. I hope you will consider attending. Thanks so much for your support, CC Dan Talsky, daniel.talsky@journaltimes Graphic illustration by Dan Talsky, daniel.talsky@journaltimes. July 04, 2013 6:00 am • LEE B. ROBERTS lroberts@journaltimes(0) Comments Blooming flowers, live music, history, original artwork and more will come together for a new celebration at the DeKoven Center on July 28. Preservation Racine turns 40 this year, and the nonprofit organization — devoted to preserving our community’s historic buildings and sites — is inviting everyone to come celebrate its milestone at an anniversary Garden Party on the lakefront campus. The afternoon/evening event will feature self-guided tours of the DeKoven Center’s gardens in full bloom, as well as workshops, led by area florists and garden center representatives. Party-goers will also be able to tour the center’s historic buildings, and enjoy entertainment by local musicians throughout the grounds, according to Robin Sutherland Coventry and Sybil Knop, event co-chairpersons. Performers will include singer/songwriter Cynthia Chitko, harpist Anne Morse Hambrock, the Wild Thyme band featuring Irish and world music, and members of the Racine Symphony Orchestra. There will also be a special art exhibition/auction during the Garden Party, which takes a new look at the architecture of Racine’s former Venetian Theater. Called Venetian ARTifacts, the exhibit features creations by 30 local artists — each of which incorporates an original architectural plaster molding from the former Downtown movie theater. Artists from throughout the community were invited to take one of the pieces, donated by Doug Wick of Downtown’s Common Scents, and “upcycle” it into a new work of art. The pieces will be auctioned off in DeKoven’s Great Hall during the party, with proceeds benefitting Preservation Racine. For more about this project and the Venetian Theatre, turn to the Scene & Heard column on Page 4. As party-goers make their way through the center grounds, they can also nosh on food, provided by area restaurants, and beverages from cash bars located both inside and out. The afternoon’s garden theme will be carried out in the food and beverage offerings, Coventry said, including specialty beverages made with garden herbs and flavorings. Overall, the party will have an ambiance similar to that of the Ravinia entertainment venue in Illinois, said Coventry, also president of Preservation Racine. At the same time, it will be a casual event, where people can relax and enjoy the surroundings, said Knop, who serves as the organization’s membership coordinator. “There will an educational feel to it as well,” said Coventry, referring to the gardening workshops and various historic displays to be featured. Representatives from the Racine Heritage Museum will share information about the Venetian Theatre, as well as the “Downtown Then and Now” photographic exhibition, with photographs taken by local photographers Brad Jaeck, Carol Hansen and Robert Hartmann. And historian Jim Mercier will present a display of local history items from his collection, according to organizers. Participants will be issued a booklet with a map of the gardens and information about the DeKoven Center buildings. Master Gardeners will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information about the grounds’ gardens. And both voice and silent auctions will be offered.
