Hello everyone! Its time for a tip of the day!:) Today lets talk about... habitat! Did you know bearded dragons are from Australia? They come from areas called the Spinifex Desert rightly named for its multiple colonies of Spinifex grasses. These badlands are a hot and harsh enviroment, with hard , rocky clay soil and many cliffs and small trees and bushes. Wait a minute did you say CLAY? I thought these were desert animals!! Yes indeed, they are desert animals. But not all deserts are equal! The Spinifex desert is unique in that its covered in red clay and arches of rock and stone. Even other deserts around the world are different from one another. Arizona has large canyons and cacti with areas of sand and dirt. Africas Sahara has massive piles of sand dunes. Because we cannot truly emulate clay in captivity (it would be messy anyways!) Slate tile, carpet, paper towel, and even linoleum shelf liner are perfect alternatives. Slate tile is highly reccomended by breeders and keepers alike due to its ability to hold and disperse heat, and naturally file your dragons nails. Plus it looks nice!:)
