Hello everyone, Update from Sam and Laurie on Anguilla; Just had - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone, Update from Sam and Laurie on Anguilla; Just had to relate this morning’s events on Shoal Bay beach. A few mornings a week, Laurie and I try to get down to Shoal Bay beach with coffee and light breakfast to give our aging Black Lab, Bradley a little low-impact exercise and for a little fellowship on the beach. This morning, as we were headed back to the car, we were approaching the exit between Madieraman Restaurant and Uncle Ernies’s Beach Shack, and a movement caught my eye in the next restaurant over (that used to be associated with Ku Resort). It looked like a calf of some kind as it disappeared behind a bar structure. I mentioned it to Laurie, and she suggested it might be a goat….(lots of those here). I told her this was too tall to be a goat. About that time, a donkey came into view and we thought that was a little strange….nothing much is a LOT strange on Anguilla anymore. The donkey stopped, turned to look at us, and started to turn in our direction. He was not more than about 15 yards away. I suggested to Laurie that we pick up the pace just a bit…..too late. He started our way, and then went into a trot. Laurie was closest to it, and held out what little food she had hoping it would stop to eat it. It paused but then headed for me and Bradley. I tried to duck into Madieraman Restaurant with Bradley but the donkey got between us. Bradley’s hips aren’t very strong anymore and she had fallen down when I tried to hurry into Madieraman. I dropped the leash and tried to keep the donkey’s attention with my stick….I never go anywhere on the roads or the beach with Bradley, without a stick. It worked so Laurie could circle around and retrieve Bradley and the leash. I backed into Madieraman, pulling chairs out from the tables to put them between me and the donkey. As he tried to figure out how to navigate around the chairs, Laurie and Bradley got much closer to the car, and we all made a break for it. Laurie was holding Bradley on the far side of the car while I unlocked it. All the while, Laurie was repeating “give me the stick”…..intending to fend off the donkey while I lifted Bradley into the car. Instead, I just popped the hatch to load Bradley in the back, keeping the stick close at hand. About this time, the donkey had finally made its way all the way through the dining area of Madieraman, and again had clear space between us…about 10 yards to go. He started our way, and I had not yet loaded Bradley into the car. I stopped, took a step toward him and slapped the pavement with the stick, since pavement was a less certain surface for his hard hooves. He paused and started to turn away. It gave us time to finish loading up to make our get away. Our British landlords own a donkey on the west end they’ve named Jimmy Carter……so Laurie and I have named this particular ass, Billy Clinton…. That’s it from the front…. Sam & Laurie
