Hello everyone and welcome to this weeks edition of Deck of the Week. The current Standard format is coming to a close with the Khans of Tarkir prerelease on the horizon, so I would like to take a look at an interesting new take on a deck that is usually pretty set in stone in its ways. Elves by Steve Medanic Maindeck 1 Ruric Thar, the Unbowed 4 Deathrite Shaman 1 Craterhoof Behemoth 1 Scavenging Ooze 4 Gitaxian Probe 4 Green Suns Zenith 4 Misty Rainforest 4 Verdant Catacombs 4 Elvish Visionary 2 Nettle Sentinel 2 Heritage Druid 2 Dryad Arbor 4 Glimpse of Nature 4 Wirewood Symbiote 1 Birchlore Rangers 2 Forest 2 Llanowar Elves 4 Gaeas Cradle 3 Natural Order 3 Quirion Ranger 1 Taiga 2 Bayou 1 Reclamation Sage Sideboard 3 Abrupt Decay 1 Progenitus 3 Thoughtseize 3 Cabal Therapy 1 Natural Order 4 Blood Moon With the exception of how many basic Forests and how many, if any, Birchlore Rangers to play, the Elves Legacy decks are all usually within a few cards of each other. Here we see Steve changing things up quite a bit with a full set of Gitaxian Probe in the main. Knowing what is in your opponents hand can be invaluable when you have something as powerful as Natural Order that can set you back if it happens not to resolve. Getting to put a Craterhoof Behemoth into play nice and early and just kill your opponent is always awesome, and knowing when the coast is clear to just run it out there might be worth the slots. Speaking of Natural Order, Steve has another spicy target in his deck. Since it only costs 4GR, its also possible to just cast Ruric Thar, the Unbowed from your hand, which will be sure to raise an eyebrow when he hits play. Making your opponents take six damage from their noncreature spells is pretty awesome in a format where the best spell is a one-mana Blue instant that doesnt kill Ruric Thar. The last bit of technology is in the sideboard to go along with the Taiga in the main deck that helps us cast Ruric Thar. Blood Moon is a card that has been shaping Legacy for the last six months or so and continues to show up in interesting places. Whether its in the sideboard of the UW/r Miracles deck, or even here in the sideboard of Elves, its sure to give some people a bad time. Ross Merriam feels that the Blood Moon plan for Elves isnt worth it, since the decks that Blood Moon is good against are already good matchups, but Steve hoisting the trophy this weekend will be sure to change some peoples minds on the subject. If youre looking for a new take on an already established archetype, Steve Medanics Elves list that he used to win the Legacy Open in St. Louis this last weekend might just be for you! —
