Hello family and friends. You may have noticed Ive been re-posting videos of poets all day. #BlackPoetsSpeakOut is an astounding collection of video poems speaking to systemic violence against black people, the absence of justice in our own country and the longstanding, harrowing reality of racism. Its a travesty that we must still assert our humanity with signs like I Am A Man and Black Lives Matter. Historians document what happened; poets document how people FELT about what happened, and in this case, keeps happening. THERE IS SOME SERIOUS WITNESSING AND TESTIMONY, SINGING, GRIEF, DECRYING AND SIGNIFYING as these poets read their own work or other poets work. Ive shared several videos on my page. You can also access them on Cave Canems FB page or follow #blackpoetsspeakout across Twitter and other social media platforms. Watch them. Share them. Have meaningful conversations with children and friends who reflect the full range of citizens in this country. Writing I hear you, Im angry too or This is unacceptable are powerful statements, lessening the complicity of silence. Empathy is a powerful beginning to real, lasting change.
