Hello fellow campers, I thought i would share with you what happened to me last weekend in the Victorian High Country just so it doesnt happen to anyone else. I bought a camper at the end of last year from an Australian manufacturer here in Canberra. I opted for a local dealer as i knew it was made local and i could choose any extras i wanted. I requested a Treg hitch as part of the build but was told the hitch they supplied was equally as good, my guess is that it is a cheap Chinese copy brand name is Trek. Anyway what happened was we were traveling in convoy. 6 cars in total on McCarthys Track which is a very steep track. When climbing up we went over a wash out when the top of the Coupling sheared off causing the D shackle to spring open and the camper break free. Fortunately when it happened it was around 3cms from the top of the wash out where it went dead on the track. What i have since discovered is that the hitch does not need to meet any sort of Australian Standard only the coupling does. So i just wanted everyone to be aware of these cheap cast metal type hitches are in my opinion dangerous and should not be used. We were fortunate that the camper stopped where it did as the situation could have been much different if it broke 3cm earlier. Attached is a photo of the broken hitch and the spot where we had to recover the camper from.
