Hello folks, lets educate ourselves a bit. Ok, I have seen a lot of online protests against child marriage on Facebook, BB and other social sites. I joined the protest on BB to show my support for the solidarity. But I decided to refrain myself from doing same on Facebook until I have details of what happened on the floor of the house. From my findings, I realized many of us don’t know what transpired, we just see what people post and we follow suite (Niaja tinz) without making any effort to get details. Everybody kept saying Legislators are promoting underage marriage. This was not what happened. Somehow 1999 constitution has made provision for underage marriage, so it is not a new clause in the constitution. The committee set up to review the 1999 constitution has recommended section 29 (4) (b) which states that “Any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age” be removed from the constitution as this contradicts the preceding section which defines full age to be 18 and above. Of course, section 29 (4) (b) gives a pedophile like Yerima a defence to justify his marriage to a 13 yr old girl from Egypt. So in an attempt to protect himself, he used religion to steer support from Northern Muslim senators by quoting item 61 of the second schedule to the constitution which disallows the senate from interfering in the marriages under Islamic Law and Customary Law. Now you can see that Nigeria has the most confused constitution in the world. In my opinion, I think the entire constitution needs to be completely overhauled. Considering Section 1 (3) of the constitution, I think we need to know to what extent Islamic and Customary Laws are inconsistent with the constitution. That section to me is vague. I think we need to be familiar with our constitution to fight this underground move by these sick brains!
