Hello from Cuba, NM First off let me say, New Mexico might turn - TopicsExpress

Hello from Cuba, NM First off let me say, New Mexico might turn out to be my favorite state. It has a lot to offer in scenery diversity, everything from high mountain pines, Aspens, desert, red rock formations, ect... It seems to be a perfect mix of mountains meet the desert. Plus the people here are very laid back and friendly, just like the real Mexico. The drivers so far are the nicest of any state so far to cyclists. To a tee they slow down on dirt roads or even stop to let us pass. Even on the road they are extra courteous. It is very refreshing. That being said, so far the riding has almost kicked our sore behinds and almost caused us to pack it in. Since our arrival, in order we have had to, divert extra miles off course do to a fire and smoke, fix flat tires from goat heads, climb our hardest day of 5800 feet over roads that you can not drive, with lots of pushing the bikes up. Causing us to go thru all our water because it was hot, only then to start raining so hard we thought we might have to wait out the rain at 10,000 feet an extra day with no water, worried about no water we rode over an hour and a half in the dark trying to get to a creek which we made it to, only to find it dry. I rode with a flash light in my mouth with Denise trying to follow my path thru the rocky terrain. Then we had to set up camp in the pouring rain. Fortunately, my rain catching tarp worked and it saved our ass. Only to find the next day with fog, rain, and hail with again the road so rough we had to walk DOWN steep rocky sections and another day in the rain that dragged on what seemed to be forever. I think if there had been one more climb, we would have thrown our bikes over the cliff. Fortunately, the last 10 miles where down a fun paved downhill through beautiful scenery bringing us to Cuba, NM where we are now sitting out the rain on a rest day. Well if you dont count laundry and bike maintenance. Still this has been an incredible adventure that somehow finds new challenges to bring us everyday it seems. My hat is off to my hero Denise, I dont know how she does it, plus she has to put up with me! Hoping all is well with everyone, we are looking forward to returning to the comfort of our friends. All our best, Hans y Denise PS we have picked Oct 25 had our finish date. I just passed 2400 miles. Think I might make 3000 when all is said and done Sent from my iPod
