Hello, my name is Rachel Long and I am a local artist in Midland, Texas. I have been drawing since I was a small child and wish to follow art as a career. I have recently graduated from Midland Classical Academy and will be attending college in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree. I believe art is an immensely fascinating vison of the soul and it would be a disservice not to express it in some form or fashion. I believe that it is through God’s benevolence that I do my work and it is He that should receive all the credit, for He gives me and the means to express said inspiration. Now the eyes are the window to the soul, or so they say. Now I find the eyes to be the most beautiful and captivating things in any art piece. What I mean is this, all art work is produced through the eyes in some way, or if the eyes are impaired, other senses combine to formulate the vision. Every person has a remarkable vision and a soul that is none but their own. Thus this is why everyone’s perception differs; everyone’s art work varies; none is alike, which is a wonderful phenomenon. And it is this phenomenon in which I come by my inspiration. In the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “Art is long and Time is fleeting.” My artwork represents what I am emotionally feeling at the time or what I am faced with in life; and sometimes a mixture of both. Currently I am not conveying any particular, overarching message with my work; I am simply making art that I wish to create and whatever is inspiring me at the moment. I want to cover a large range of media and subject matter, so that I can better my skills and expand my artistic horizons. However I am at the point in my life where one chapter is closing and the other is beginning; the chapter of expansion of materials is reaching its last few pages and the dawn of meaning and goals is ever advancing. I will always try new things and be open to new materials, but it is not my main focus right now. I must concentrate my skills on a limited few rather than dabbling in it all. I must find a message for my work. I want to show people that art as a whole holds a relationship with mankind that is so dense that it’s engrained in all of us. I want to bring to light and physically represent the abstract things in which we find, as mankind, beautiful in this world.
