Hello one Spark, my son joined the Army five years ago. My son was an All-American athlete in high school, and was very smart young man. He had lots of scholarships to play football but chose instead to go into the Army. That is been a stream since he was a little boy. My son had done several tours overseas and every time it seemed to make me a little more nervous every time he went over, I felt like his luck was going to run out. He always kiss me on the cheek and say mom dont worry about Jesus on my side what can go wrong. My son was a great leader and people love to follow him. He became a squad leader right away and took his job very seriously because he had so many people he was responsible for on a daily basis. My son love to work hard but he also love to play hard and he was one of the biggest practical jokers on this planet. I think this is why the guys in the squad loved him so much. 22 days before my son was to get all the Army they were going to go on a routine mission to check things out. Their convoy came under heavy fire and several the vehicles had taken direct hits. One of the vehicles had taken a direct hit from IED and several guys inside or hurt very badly. My son told his squad to set a perimeter and give them cover as he ran in to help the guys that were hurt. He got the first, second, and the third guide back to safety, when he was bring in the fourth man back he took a direct hit to the head and was killed immediately. That day my son safe for lives, which Im very grateful for but it does not ease the pain. My son was very involved in our neighborhood where we live. It joins up to very bad neighborhood and my son would always go over and play with a lot of the young kids. There was a young man that was 14 his name was Jamaal. My son loved him so much and they did so many things together. I dreaded having to tell Jamaal that my son had been killed in the line of duty. I went to Jamaals house and ask him if he could come over for just a little bit I needed to tell him something. He looked me in the eye and said Mikeys dad right. I ask him how he knew and he said he just felt a heaviness on his heart. We sat and cried for hours and talked for a long time, about all the things that we did with Mike. When I got all of Mikes affairs in order, I was going through his room and found a note in an envelope that was addressed to me. The note said mom if youre finding this letter you know that Ive been killed in the line of duty. I want to make it easy for you, so heres what Id like you to do with my things: give everything in my room to Jamaal, and tell them to wear them with love. I would like you to keep my car up until Jamaal turned 16 and then give it to him. I would like you to take the cash for my insurance policies and set them up for a college fund for Jamaal. Please let them know that somebody died in order to give him a great education. The money that it is in the accounts I want you and dad to go on a trip, to wherever youd like and spend every dime and make sure that you have the best time that you possibly could. I sat and cried for a while and didnt want to let go of anything in his room. I called Jamaal over and I read the letter Jto him and he started to cry. He asked me why somebody would do this for him. I told him that my son believed in him and that he loved him very much. Dave, the last wish that my son had was that I was supposed to send you a check and he told me you would know what to do with it. He told me to tell you thank you for all the conversations that you had with them and all the wonderful boxes a love that you sent to him and his squad. He said for me to tell you he knows that this is nowhere close to repaying what you did for him but he thought something was better than nothing. My son wanted to let everybody on this page know that your sparks encourage them in the darkest times. When bombs were blowing up all around them and bullets were flying like crazy, they would take out the books that they would send them filled with sparks and they would read them over and over again and say one day Im to be a master Spark ever like all these people on this page. So please understand what a powerful role that you played in my sons life on a daily basis. When he and his squad were at their worst of worse times your kind and loving sparks would give them the faith to fight one more day, and it would give them the hope to know that one day everything was going to be all right. So for Mikeys mom I would like to say thank you to each and every person that played a part in my sons life whether you knew what or not, your kind post and words of encouragement got him through many miserable days. Love Mikeys mom
