Hello to all you lovely new friends who have taken the time to come and visit my page. You are all so welcome and I really appreciate you taking the time. Huge thanks to the gorgeous, amazingly talented Shawna of McGreevy Cakes for sharing my Alice in Wonderland cake on her fantastic page. Pop over to view Shawnas amazing cakes, if you havent already. Shawna is one of my most favourite sugarcrafters and I will be lucky enough to meet her this year when she visits Ireland. Some of you have asked how I made the board for my Alice in Wonderland cake, so Ive included a few photos below. Rather than just going for a standard black and white tiled uniform floor, I wanted to create an effect which would fool the eyes. Step 1: I covered my cake board with white modelling paste. I always use modelling paste rather than sugarpaste for my boards so that if anyone is picking up the cake at the party venue and their fingers touch the cake board, they wont leave any fingerprints. Step 2: I always have lots of cake box lids left so I always keep them for making stencils etc. I measured out a circle the same size as the cake board (14) and then drew on a pattern of different diamond shapes. I didnt want any uniformity in size as I wanted to achieve the look of a floor that was moving. I kept a lip on the edge of my stencil so I could easily lift it off the cake board after airbrushing. I shaded all the sections that I wanted to cut out. I didnt bother going right to the centre with my pattern as the cake was going to sit on top of this part. Step 3: (the tedious part!): Cut out all the shaded parts with a sharp scalpel. This bit takes a good bit of time Step 4: Place the stencil onto the cake board making sure that it meets the edges. Then hold your breath while you airbrush gently with black (too much air flow and the stencil will blow off the board). Then lift off the stencil carefully using the lip. I didnt want to sharpen the edges of the black diamond shapes with paint afterwards as I felt the blurred edges added to the effect. Hope you enjoy! Karen x
